Former Facebook employee testifies in front of Congress

October 5, 2021

Frances Haugen told Congress that Facebook “knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people.” She said that absent Congressional intervention, social media companies like Facebook are “tearing apart our democracy, putting children in danger, and sowing ethnic violence around the world.”

Haugen was a product manager for Facebook from 2019 to 2021 and worked on their Civic Integrity team.

What else is each side focusing on?
  • Facebook didn’t do enough in 2020 to stop the spread of misinformation.
  • Facebook has undue monopoly control over the social media marketplace.
  • Facebook won’t change because it knows that the spread of misinformation is profitable.
  • Facebook and other Big Tech firms unfairly censor conservative views, treating them as misinformation rather than genuine viewpoints.
  • Facebook is a monopoly and should be broken up so it doesn’t hold undue power to control speech.
The Narrative

Haugen courageously spoke up when many at Facebook won’t stand up to corrupt leadership, who have disregarded the company’s role in spreading misinformation.

Haugen is right that Facebook holds way too much power and will put their profits over political freedom, but her actions are only an attempt to censor conservative voices.
